“Precise work and the perfect preparation of the nails – cutters and matching attachments are the best choice for this,” says our nail designer Stefanie. The practical instruments with attachments and bits are often used in nail design because they effortlessly ensure that the work is carried out particularly accurately and cleanly. The useful tools rotate and remove material in this way. They are available as a version with a power connection and cable as well as a battery-operated version. Various attachments are available commercially, which differ in their size and shape as well as in the coarseness or fineness of their surface - they are suitable for various areas of application in manicure and pedicure .
7 studio tips: When are nail cutters used?
Our expert uses the nail cutters in the studio on the nails and to remove tough cuticles. When refilling a model with gel, nail cutters and coarser attachments are used to sand off the old gel quickly and thoroughly. Remaining varnish residues, for example in the groove between the nail and the cuticle, can also be carefully removed - a very fine attachment is particularly suitable for this in order to protect the natural nail and not remove a lot of material unnecessarily. In classic manicure as well as for gel , shellac , acrylic and UV nail polish, finer bits can be used to prepare the nails: They are used to mill along the arch of the cuticle in order to remove the skin that has grown on the nail. This gives you a particularly clean edge of the nail - this is important so that the products have reliable and long-lasting adhesion directly to the nail. In the nail salon, the nail cutter and its attachments are also used when working with stencils, explains our professional. With the help of the milling cutter, the template can be corrected from the underside or milled thinner from above, as well as obtaining a sweeping, natural arch. In the area of pedicures , nail cutters and their bits are used in the same way as in manicures. They are also suitable for cutting thickened nails thinner and for removing stubborn calluses.

Milling cutter attachments: Find the right shape
Various attachments or bits are available for nail design cutters. Their shape makes them ideal for certain tasks in nail design and, when used correctly, makes them easier to carry out - from removing calluses to applying nail art to milling off the gel modelling. In general: Larger shapes for larger areas, such as the surface of toenails, smaller shapes for delicate work, for example on the fingernail fold.

Nail design: material of the nail cutter attachments
“High-quality nail cutters and their attachments are characterized by a long service life when used regularly. They generate very little heat while working and run pleasantly smoothly, which makes working easier,” explains our expert.
The surface structure of the bits can be fine, medium or coarse: The finer grits are suitable for working on natural nails, while coarser grits are suitable for artificial nails and make removal easier. Corrosion resistance is particularly important for use in the studio, as is suitability for all sterilization and cleaning processes. Different materials are suitable as abrasives for different areas of application. Among other things, cutters with soft corundum are popular, which are ideal for fine-tuning natural nails. The durable diamond grinder is a perfect helper for pedicures, while carbide bits are often suitable for rougher work, such as removing calluses, are sometimes characterized by high resistance to corrosion and can be used wet or dry. Ceramic cutters can be used, among other things, to effectively remove severe calluses.

Be careful when using nail cutters:
Our expert advises you to be careful not to damage the cuticles, for example with sharp-edged cutters. Choose the right attachment with the right grit, otherwise you can accidentally mill the natural nail too thin and cause sensitivity - it's better to remove less than too much material!
3 steps: Clean nail cutter bits properly
As with all nail design instruments, you should also clean and disinfect your cutter and especially the attachments thoroughly after each use. Work in the following order for optimal cleanliness:
-
Remove any coarse contamination
First, the bits are cleaned with a special dusting brush (hard bristles) to remove coarse dust and visible dirt, such as paint residue.
-
disinfection
In the nail salon, infections can easily be transmitted through unclean work. That's why you should disinfect the nail cutter bits after rough cleaning. You can disinfect them in a tub of disinfectant , as well as in a suitable sterilizer or ultrasonic cleaner . For reliable disinfection, be sure to use the disinfectants and other accessories according to the enclosed instructions! -
Dry & sort away
After disinfection, let the nail cutter bits dry thoroughly on a clean surface and then store them in a box designed for this purpose, where they will remain clean and dry until their next use.
Nail design: Avoid mistakes when working with nail cutters and bits
“Incorrectly setting the speed is a classic mistake when using nail cutters. If it's too low, nothing happens, you apply more pressure and don't work effectively. If the speed is too high, too much material can accidentally be removed and an unpleasant feeling of heat develops on the nail or skin due to the strong friction,” explains our expert. If you set the speed correctly, you can work on everything without much pressure; the cuticles and residues of varnish or gel can be easily removed - of course without leaving any visible damage to the nail. Under no circumstances should the customer feel pain, which is why you should practice using the nail cutter carefully and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Our nail designer also advises you to check the nail cutter and its attachments before starting work to ensure that all instruments have been cleaned, that the device is secure and that the cable is in order.
Nail cutter with battery or cable?
Our expert uses cabled nail cutters in the nail salon because she knows the local conditions and the tools are used many times every day. The milling cutters are always used at the same workplace and therefore do not have to be transported. Working with a battery-operated cutter is sometimes more practical for home and mobile nail designers. “It is not always clear to a traveling beautician in advance what the workplace will look like and whether there will be a power connection nearby - with the mobile nail cutter you are flexible and always well equipped,” says our expert.
