Nail care tips: Hand and nail care for nursing staff

The nursing staff are in constant work, especially during the Corona crisis - this also puts a strain on the skin of the hands and nails. Constant and long hand washing and regular disinfection are important measures to prevent the virus from spreading further and to protect yourself from infection. However, this puts a lot of strain on the skin and nails. Our nail designer Stefanie has important tips for caregivers to care for stressed hands and protect their nails.

What problems do nursing staff have when it comes to hands and nails?

Nail designer Stefanie: The skin barrier is of course very damaged. Dryness, cracks, burning and itching and even dry eczema can result. In addition, these damaged areas represent entry points for other pathogens.

What is the best way to care for irritated skin?

Nail designer Stefanie: Mild to moderate irritation can be cared for with regular, frequent application of cream. Hand masks and care oils are also recommended. If you have severe irritation, you should go to a dermatologist who can prescribe special products. Fragrances and paraffins can be particularly irritating at this time!

At what time of day should the care be applied?

Nail designer Stefanie: The care products are best applied before going to bed. If you put cotton gloves over it, you ensure that the product stays on your skin and the warmth also ensures that the pores open and the active ingredients can work better.

What nail length and shape do you recommend for nursing staff in times of crisis?

Nail designer Stefanie: I definitely recommend short nails with rounded edges. This means you don't destroy the protective gloves and the likelihood of a nail tearing or breaking is greatly reduced. If the nail is a little longer, you should make sure that it is cleaned regularly from below with a clean nail brush.

What is the best way to wash my hands?

Nail designer Stefanie: The clinic's instructions still apply when it comes to washing your hands properly - you can't make any relaxations or exceptions here to ensure everyone's protection. For use at home after work, I recommend using a pH-neutral soap to wash your hands for around 20 seconds. It's best to choose lukewarm instead of hot water to protect the skin. In general, you should avoid further unnecessary contact of your hands with water and, for example, always wear rubber gloves when washing dishes to prevent irritation. You should also wear gloves when cleaning to avoid drying out the skin further with harsh cleaning agents.
